We took the boys to the awards ceremony for the paintings they submitted in the Art City Days competition. The judges seemed to prefer the submissions with a more "realistic" slant. You know - where you could tell what the child was trying to draw or paint? (I'm not totally on board with their preference, but I know better than to pout.) Plus 3-5 year olds were lumped into one category, and there are several worlds of difference between a 3 year old and a 5 year old when it comes to creating art. The winner in their category had drawn a 5-year-old version of a dragon or dinosaur. And you could tell it was a dragon or dinosaur, so it won.
Luckily every participant got a ribbon. And everyone who came got a cookie. And the prizes were primarily composed of art supplies my kids already have. Because I'm a diligent mom that way. And my kids would much rather have a cookie than more crayons or markers. Go figure.
