initiation

I was pretty sure we'd already done this one, but maybe I didn't document it properly, so God decided we needed to do it again.  Enter kids + scissors.  Our Captain and our Gentleman gave each other hack-jobs recently.  The Captain just had one chunk out of the front, but our Gentleman, oy vey.

So with some intervention, it turned into this.  With a side of short-term nicknames: Buzz, Baldy, you name it.

The culprit.  I'm pretty positive he instigated the whole thing, I know he took the scissors to his brother's head, and he's quite regularly taken to saying things like, "When you love somebody, you love them even when they make you mad." He's going to negotiate his way through life, no doubt.

Captain Courageous

IMG_3222June2013demilledancerecital

This kid cracks us up.  There is no adult alive who would not be endlessly amused by the workings of his little man mind.

IMG_3244June2013demilledancerecital

The other night he came into my room chewing a mouthful of gum.  Without reserve he told me he had sneaked into his brother's candy (a gift-bag from a birthday party).  I told him he'd better hope that Sir O didn't notice or else he'd be upset.  To which the Captain replies.  "OK, but if he does get mad, will you help me to not get hurt?"

IMG_3245June2013demilledancerecital

I think he's got very little guile in him, although he does snap when provoked or frustrated.  And he can be naughty, but always transparently so.  If you can step back far enough from the thick of things you will always be amused by the bubble of his little reality.  He negotiates the world pretty well, and he figures out things with a fair amount of nuance, but the peculiarities of his focus are what makes him so unique.  He'll get hung up on earlobes and belly buttons and what is made of plastic and holding ice cubes in his hand until they melt, and meticulously taking apart whatever his brother last built out of legos (imagine the altercations).

He is phenomenally sweet; even when he's his angriest there is still something sweet in him.  I keep praying that it never goes away, it is what makes him most likeable, and with all of his quirks he shall need to be as liked as possible.  If we can just harness his little punching fits of rage when he's been outmatched he may manage to grow up with friends.

Apraxia, Captain flavored.

Behold, I shew you a mystery.....

I have this child that I just don't get.  That's not a fair thing to say, because I can't claim to have a handle on any of my children.  But while Sir O usually exasperates me, and the Gentleman usually makes me laugh, I am purely bewildered by our Captain.

In the last 8 months or so the physical manifestations of his apraxia have become more distinct and pronounced. I had him tested for proprioception and balance and he's now being evaluated by an occupational therapist quarterly, because he's struggling with both.  He just can't seem to do any finessed motor planning, and everything he does turns out floppy.  On the one hand it must be very frustrating for him.

On the other hand, it's almost impossible as a parent to distinguish between when he's being floppy because he cannot help it and when he's being floppy because he can help it.  The two identical looking behaviors require a polar opposite response from me the mamma.  I screw this up a lot.

Another pre-church goose. #afterglow

Luckily he's still got the sweetest, most guile-less personality underneath all the awkwardness.  The way he interprets the world around him is intensely sincere.  He gets attached to people easily and assumes they are equally attached to them.  He's often highly anticipatory of things that are bound to fizzle.  Like last week when he was SO excited to surprise his swimming teacher with his new rash guard.  He was sure she would find it as exciting as he did.  She did not.  But he rolled with it.  He doesn't get all bent out of shape over frustrated expectations the way his older brother does.

I'm still feeling my way in the dark with him.  I don't know how useful expectations are with children anyway, but I have had to hang a lot of assumptive expectations up out of sight for a while.  It's still to early to know what an adult Captain is going to look and function like, or what he'll be able to compensate for with years of practice.  As of now he can't hold a writing utensil well enough to write or draw with intent, and he can't sit in a chair for 5 minutes without falling off of it. He falls down a lot. He cries a lot.   He's smart, but not always able to do the things required to appear smart. I'm learning a lot.  Mostly I'm unlearning a lot.  I struggle to divorce myself from assumptions and judgements and expectations.  Many days I feel like Eustace Scrubb having his scales stripped off.  It's painful and vulnerable.  I know it's refining me, and I'm grateful for that.  I'm still in the middle of it, without the perspective of past tense, so I'm still feeling willing to give it all up and live without it if anyone offers me a silver-bullet fix.  It's funny, and kind of lonely.  But I know there are plenty of mothers going through this with me and before me and who will follow me.  None of us will anticipate finding ourselves here though, will we?

It's odd to deal with such an invisible disability.  It's so nuanced, this one.  It's not obvious to anyone but me his mother and the trained special-ed specialists what it is that he's struggling with.  To most everyone else he just seems a little clumsy, a little awkward, kind of slow, a little bit dumb.  He's not the least bit dumb, and given how much he has to focus to do any motor planning, he's remarkably coordinated.  The kid knows how to work hard, and has had to work much harder than most of his peers to do things that come naturally, even thoughtlessly to them.  But he's done it.  Somewhere down the line having learned how to work so hard has to come around with good karma.

In the meantime, well, I'm the mom.  I'm the cheerleader and coach.  Sometimes I'm all there is between him and the brutality of the world.  I'm pretty sure I signed up for this somewhere, and I'm pretty sure I didn't grasp what it was when I did.  But it's mine and I own it, even as I struggle to figure it out, every single day.

Summertime Blues

Have I mentioned how this Summer is eating me alive?  If I ever in all my childhood told my mother I was bored, I repent most fervently now.  (Though I don't think I did that much, I was a fairly self-contained low-key child.) God, in all of His good-humor, thought I needed to learn about boredom.  So He sent me Sir O, the bellicose.

Sheesh.  A little overkill, wasn't that?

His first face paint. There was drama. #vscocam #afterlight

But despite the admitted inevitable futility of our attempts, we keep coming up with things to do.  I am the queen of arts of crafts - all of which are rejected after one or two rounds.  We fit in outings when we're feeling brave or can borrow an extra pair of supervisory hands.

I find I am so much more than outnumbered these days.  I'm like an ant in a tsunami half of the time.  And the other half I am playing catch-up, trying to remind everyone inside the house that everyone outside of the house is holding me accountable for their shenanigans, even and especially when I have no control over them.

This is Sir O at my little sister's final/Senior Ballet recital.  I've been trying to take him on dates to  get him used to the idea of behaving himself in public.  He seems to mistake the purpose of these outings to be an exercise in stressing his mother out.  I'm going to be stubborn and keep trying.

Happiest kid ever. #vsco #vscocam #afterlight #vscocam_kids

Oh, the messes at my house.  My kids are gross, I'm just going to say it.  I am the only thing standing between them and a major cockroach infestation.  Luckily, from what I can tell most kids are gross, and would happily live in total squalor.  There are a great many moms run as ragged as me.

Ah Bunny, the squishiness.  Just stay this way forever and ever, okay?

The Captain has decided I need more learning curve than just the anxiety and belligerence of Sir O.  His apraxia has been pushing lots of buttons lately.  The list just keeps growing of seemingly small things that are going to be "issues", possibly forever more.  Piled all together they begin to look formidable.  I need to sit down and process that in a post soonish.

Oh.... Captain.

If you have six minutes to spare you could watch this interview with our Captain:

Which would reveal a few things.

I needed more depth of field, sorry about the fuzzy bits.

He is a quintessential second child.

We love Mo Willems at our house.

His speech is coming along swimmingly, though you can tell he still struggles with his L's, R's, and with a number of vowel errors.

He has a really weird sense of body position.  I finally have the name for that symptom.  And I am taking it and packing myself up to go back to square one with Special Ed and the school district.  Thanks to Ms Tracy, I feel like I'm getting closer to solving the mystery that is our Captain.  Hooray for prospective answers!

Also - this kid is adorable, and I just eat him up.

I just adore 4

This child. I tell you what.

IMG_2470Dec2012demillechristmas

He is the most alive little person you'll ever see.

IMG_2465Dec2012demillechristmas

He makes me think of Emily Webb in "Our Town" when she says, "Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it--every, every minute?" And her answer is "no." But she never met our Captain. He'd have relieved her mind.

He's crazy excited to turn 4, but told me "I still like the things I used to like when I was 3."

He is just so incredibly present all the time.  And sometimes, this is a detriment.  His ability to forecast and follow through on moderately complex instructions is, shall we say, not his forte? It causes some grief between him and that other parent that lives here.  He is just too busy fully living in any given present moment.

He really looks exactly like the Tiny Tim in George C Scott's Scrooge. #vscocam

But he is the king of being excited, and tiny trivial things are miracles to him. And he says he loves me every.single.day. He wants to sit by me at every meal, and it's fun to be his favorite, because the kid gets fixated on his favorite things to an unbelievable extent. So if you happen to be a blue, sword-fighting, motorcycle-riding, motherly pig with chocolate milk and an iphone with angry birds in-tow, you are SET. And he will sing-song your praises in his adorable halted little boy voice all the day long. Marvelous stuff.

Woke up to this mug 2 inches from my face.... Again.

The poor boy has a birthday on Epiphany.  It is not an ideal time to have a birthday, as your parents are usually gasping for figurative air after the winter holidays.  But we did our best to celebrate this crazy cool kid who reminds us all to enjoy our brief and precious lives.  Mr Renn took requests and made home-made corn dogs.  I made a chocolate torte, and then took requests and frosted it in smurf-blue frosting.

Homemade birthday corn dogs

Desecrated a lovely chocolate hazelnut torte with blue frosting. #birthdayboygetswhathewants

But my favorite thing about this admittedly underwhelming birthday celebration was the card that Sir O made for his brother.  That he would take the time (of his own volition) to craft something so well-tailored to the recipient is just exhilarating to me.

Sir O made the Captain the coolest birthday card of all time.

Inside

Sometimes, I tell you, it is wonderful to be the mother of these boys.  Exhausting, but marvelous.
